Made in Berlin by BRAUN Lighting Solutions – simply better light.

The initial situation:
Hamburg Central Station is the most important rail transport hub in northern Germany. The station building was built between 1903 and 1906 to designs by architects Heinrich Reinhardt and Georg Süßenguth. The associated forecourt lighting was no longer operational or no longer available due to material wear. Originally, technically obsolete mercury vapour lamps were installed here, which had become very expensive in terms of electricity consumption.

The customer’s wish:
The forecourt lighting was to be completely renewed, whereby the luminaire bodies were to be exactly modelled on their predecessors. The installed LED lighting technology should have special light optics, with an overall improved light output of 20 watts per luminaire. In addition, a maintenance-free solution was to be created.

The solution:
The solution was a custom-made product; our replica of an original “Hamburg railway station light”, with high-performance LEDs installed inside, for which special heat sinks were designed and manufactured. The length and diameter of the luminaire remain unchanged. Energy consumption per luminaire has been reduced from 62 watts total output (HQL lamp) to 20 watts (LED installation kit). This corresponds to a saving of around 65 per cent. The clients were more than satisfied with the result, so that in subsequent orders both the main entrances to the station and the passageways were equipped with the special luminaires from BRAUN. In addition, later unsere Hamburger Bahnhofsleuchte installed in a special version under the Magdeburg and Baaken bridges. Here in a waterproof version, as the LED spotlights were installed in brackish and flooded areas.
