Made in Berlin by BRAUN Lighting Solutions – simply better light.
The initial situation:
The stone Gertrauden Bridge in Berlin-Mitte was built at the end of the 19th century to cope with the growing traffic in the centre of Berlin. It connects the historic districts of Neu-Cölln and Friedrichswerder with Alt-Cölln on the Spree island. The name is reminiscent of the Gertrauden Hospital from the 15th century. The three-metre-high statue represents the patron saint Gertraude, who helps against plagues of mice and rats and protects travellers, the poor and widows. The bridge is a listed building and is now only used as a pedestrian bridge, as road traffic crosses the steel bridge built in parallel in 1977.
The customer’s wish:
The historic luminaires on the bridge were to be refurbished in keeping with their listed status and equipped with efficient LED technology.
Our solution:
We refurbished the historic luminaires in line with the requirements of listed buildings, using our efficient His-lux LED-Modulen equipped. The roof area was fitted with a LED-Strahler that illuminates Gertraude at night. Prior to this, the old luminaire bodies were completely sandblasted, the surfaces treated, fitted with new glazing and the electrical wiring brought up to the latest technical standard. Now the bridge shines in a warm white light, in keeping with its listed status, and the illuminated Gertraude can now also be seen by Berliners and tourists in the dark. In addition to aesthetics, our lights also score highly in terms of environmental compatibility. Energy consumption and CO2 emissions were significantly reduced following the remodelling.
