LED retrofit in line with monument preservation requirements at Berlin Tempelhof Airport

Ausgangssituation

The former Tempelhof Airport is one of Berlin’s most important landmarks due to its extraordinary history, monumental architecture, and central downtown location. Today, more than 100 tenants from a wide range of industries—from public institutions to cultural and creative enterprises—have their headquarters in the historic airport building.

The adjacent 300-hectare Tempelhofer Feld site, with its former runways, is open to the public as a spacious leisure and recreation area. Since early 2015, the area has been gradually being developed into a new urban quarter for culture, events, and the creative industries. As part of this development, the listed box lights at one of the entrances to the site were to be restored and converted to modern, energy-efficient LED lighting technology.

Customer requirements

Tempelhof Projekt GmbH commissioned BRAUN Lighting Solutions to handle the entire project. The scope of services included:

  • Professional dismantling of existing lights
  • Restoration of lights and masts in line with heritage requirements
  • Technical conversion to LED technology
  • Installation and commissioning in accordance with the specifications of the heritage protection authority

The aim was to fully preserve the historical character of the lights while creating reliable, efficient, and contemporary lighting for the logistics access road.

Our solution

After careful dismantling, the listed box lights and a two-armed lighting pole underwent extensive restoration. All work was carried out with the utmost precision and in close consultation with the relevant monument protection authority.

The restored box lights were then equipped with our energy-efficient cityLED® modules. This modern LED technology now ensures uniform, safe, and long-lasting illumination of the access road to the former Tempelhof Airport – with significantly reduced energy consumption.

Result

The retrofitted luminaires combine historical appearance with state-of-the-art LED technology and fully meet both functional and heritage conservation requirements.

Both Tempelhof Projekt GmbH and the responsible heritage conservation authority were delighted with the result and praised the high-quality implementation of the project.
